Last week it was revealed that Nigrian movie marketers were making a move to have Nollywood’s highest earning actress Mercy Johnson banned. The official reason being given for MJ’s impending ban is “difficult conditions on set” but it appears the real reason is MONEY! The marketers are ganging up on her because she currently charges the highest fees per movie, between N1.8 Million & N2 Million Naira per movie.
The ban which is due to take effect in the new year has however been deemed unauthorized by President of the Association of Movie Distributors Gabriel Onyiyechi Okoye popularly called Gabosky in an interview with NET he said about the marketers,
“They haven’t perfected their job, they are interfering with actors. It’s none of their business”. He went on to add that Mercy Johnson cannot be blacklisted by marketers because they do NOT have the legal authority to do so. ‘When did they become the authority?’, he asks. However,The Film and Video Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria (FVPMAN) greatly influence movie-making decisions in Nigeria as more often than not they are responsible for bank rolling movie projects. They choose a movie’s lead characters, alter story lines & even choose movie titles. This would explain why a lot of Nollywood movie have razz titles! Like: Tear My Bra (If You Can), Radio Without Battery, Iron Pant…I could go on  on! The marketers are mostly made of razz middle aged men!
