Tragedy struck yesterday in Igede area of Oju local government area of Benue state, when a presiding officer who was being conveyed on a motorcycle to a polling unit, had an accident and died instantly. LEADERSHIP Sunday gathered that the deceased electoral officer, identified as Blessing Agidi Odeh, was a student of the Federal University of Agriculture (UAM), Makurdi. It was gathered that the incident occurred at about 8.am when the deceased was being transported on a commercial motorcycle from Oju town to her point of duty, when the bike lost control and rammed into a building. The police public relations officer, ASP Ezeani Ameachi, confirmed the death yesterday, just as he clarified that the deceased was an Assistant Presiding Officer (APO). Ezeani, who described the death as unfortunate, stated that “the deceased died while on duty and she was rushing to her polling unit of posting to conduct the polls when she had an accident and died on the spot.” He said the corpse of the deceased has been moved to a nearby mortuary in Oju and that the motorcyclist who survived the accident, is badly injured and is receiving medical treatment in a hospital in the area. Meanwhile, the presidential and national assembly elections in Benue state recorded a massive turn out of voters yesterday, but the polls was marred by late arrival of electoral materials and technical hitches experienced with the smart card readers.
