The police on Thursday arraigned a security guard, Mohammed sadiq, in a Wuse Zone 2 Senior Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, for allegedly stealing a female handbag.

Sadiq who serves as a security guard at the National Mosque was alleged to have stolen the complainant’s bag with contents valued at N220, 000.

The prosecutor, Gideon Ekomson told the court that on March 20, one Ms Ngozi Ugochukwu of Jabi Abuja reported the matter at Wuse Police Station.

He said that at about 8.30 p.m. on the said date, Sadiq who stays within Ugochukwu’s neighbourhood stole her handbag containing some personal items.

Ekomson informed the court that the content of the bag were I-phone, ATM cards among others, all valued at N220, 000. The prosecutor told the court that this offence contravened the provisions of section 387 of the Penal Code Law of the Northern Nigeria.

This section stipulates imprisonment for a term which may extend to five years or with fine or with both for an offender.

The accused person pleaded not guilty. The prosecutor prayed the court to grant him a date to open his case against the accused person since he pleaded not guilty.

Sequel to his plea of not guilty, the Magistrate, Mr Aliyu Shafa admitted the accused person to bail in the sum of N100, 000 and one reasonable surety in the like sum.

Shafa also ordered that the surety must have fixed address within the jurisdiction of the court. He then adjourned the matter till May 5, for hearing.
