Artistes like Korede Bello continually prove that the R&B genre is not dead. Signed to Mavin Records, Bello discusses some of the things he has learnt while working with Don Jazzy with Prince Ezekiel, owner of DOROVIBES. At what point did you decide that you wanted a career in the performing arts? I’ve always wanted to be a part of the world of performing arts. I love dancing and creating stuff. Also, I have a passion for everything art-related as you already know. Art is beyond music, art is life and being a part of it is just great. What are some of the challenges you. have faced in your musical journey? Well, I believe the way to the top is definitely not comfortable. Every day is a challenge for me as a musician to be better at what I do. Your latest single is interestingly titled African Princess. Tell us more about it. The title,African Princess, was inspired by the fact that I see so much beauty on this continent, Africa, and I want to be part of a new generation of young Africans who are proud of their heritage and can also represent Africa on the global stage. How did you become a Mavin? It was, without mincing words, as a result of God’s divine favour. Well, I just want to thank all the parties involved, especially Don Jazzy’s good friends and my manager. What are some of the things you have learnt working with Don Jazzy? Working with Jazzy has taught me a lot of things, first of which is humility and, most important, the God factor. There are loads of other stuff I’m still learning from him, though. Jazzy is not just the rich guy everybody knows, he has a wealth of experience and I’m just a student under his tutelage. Do you have any musical influences? If yes who and why? A lot of people inspire me at different times and, probably, because I like to be exposed to different sounds and brands. To be candid, I like everyone who does good music, but if I was forced to pick, I’ll pick Michael Jackson and Fela as my greatest musical influences. In my own case, I want to be known and remembered, not just for my music, but as the guy who gave life through music; a life-giver. Are there any artistes you’ll like to collaborate with, both internationally and locally? I would like to work with the biggest brands in the world and, also, with the best. Most importantly, I want to associate with musicians who can give life through their art. What do you think about the growth of R&B in Nigeria? I think the growth is not as fast as the other genres, but I’m optimistic that it would gain mass appeal as much the Afro-pop genre. What’s your ultimate goal as an artiste? I aspire to be a wealthy, global brand; one who gives life through his music. Who is Korede Bello? Korede Bello is the young guy everyone loves, a God-lover and a life-giver. Word of advice to your colleagues? Never relegate the God-factor, it is important, always. Word to your fans? I thank everyone who’s been supporting me from day one. I appreciate you all a lot and promise not to disappoint you. As for all my female fans, I love you too.
