Louis-van-GaalManchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has blamed the busy New Year schedule for his side’s 0-0 draw at Tottenham on Sunday afternoon.
The game at White Hart Lane was closely contested, but no team could find the all-important breakthrough on the day.
Van Gaal thinks the stalemate could be attributed to the fact his side had played just two days earlier, beating Newcastle 3-1 at Old Trafford.
“I have said one month ago what I think about this,” he said, referring to the busy Premier League schedule when most European league’s take a short break. “It is scientifically proven that the body cannot recover within 48 hours.”
“When you, as an FA, allow that, to play matches [so close together], you see what it is like. The second half was much different to the first half, not only for Manchester United, but also for Tottenham Hotpsur.”
Although United got another point to make it nine games unbeaten, Van Gaal thinks the quality of football dropped as players began to tire. “I think Tottenham Hotspur can play much better than today,” he said. “And also my team could have played in the second half much better.”
The Red Devils return to action on New Year’s Day when they lock horns with Mark Hughes’ Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium.
